Twelve quarters of better margins have repaired Tech Mahindra’s operating engine. The next test is whether genuine demand and AI pricing can keep it running.

The market celebrated a real operational repair: EBIT grew far faster than revenue. But the most revealing difference was between 15.6% rupee revenue growth and only 7.2% constant-currency growth. Once margin recovery is in the price, Tech Mahindra must show an earnings engine rather than a cost programme.
Investors rewarded a proven operational changeTech Mahindra closed around ₹1,788 on 16 October, up approximately 8.45%. The prior day’s Q2 results disclosed 14.8% EBIT margins and 40.5% YoY EBIT growth. An IT-sector recovery also contributed to the market setting; attributing the full move only to earnings would be unjustified.
The growth currencies tell different storiesIndian-rupee revenue increased 15.6% to ₹16,180 crore, while constant-currency revenue grew 7.2% YoY. The distinction matters: reported revenue includes currency translation, whereas constant-currency growth better approximates the actual services-delivery expansion.
A high-margin exit is a different problemIT utilisation rose to 88.9% from 84.4% a year earlier. It is evidence that Project Fortius and operating discipline worked; it also limits how much more improvement can come from simply keeping existing employees billable.
Q2 EBIT +40.5% and margin 14.8% with utilisation 88.9%, while Q2 FCF declined and currency magnified reported INR growth.

Why Did It Happen—and Who Actually Earns?
An IT services company monetises billable scope, customer pricing and execution capacity. Its margin depends on utilisation, offshore mix, subcontracting, employee seniority and deal-transition spending. Tech Mahindra’s leadership has repaired several of these levers since the FY24 management reset. The next round needs a different engine: stronger account wins, profitable contract repricing and services that clients cannot simply commoditise.

03Execute efficientlyUtilisation, offshore mix, AI tools and subcontractors→
04Retain the savingsClient renewals, margin durability and free cash flow
AI creates a genuine two-sided economic risk. Automation can lower delivery effort and lift margin if contract prices remain stable; it can also reduce billable hours or lead clients to demand a share of the productivity gain. Management’s Helix initiative describes the future delivery approach, but realised AI-native revenue and contract-level contribution are not separately established. The key question is who captures the productivity dividend.

At around ₹1,788, the illustrative FY29 house case delivers roughly 12% annualised price appreciation before dividends—below ARDEKO’s 18% hurdle. Higher returns need margin durability well beyond today’s achievement, faster organic revenue and a resilient earnings multiple.

Based on 1788 reference share price and a 3-year annualised horizon. FY29 PAT = (operating revenue × operating margin − company-specific depreciation and net financing) × (1 − modelled tax). EPS uses a fixed assumed share count; dilution, timing, capital actions and dividends can alter outcomes. For Tech Mahindra EPS and share price use the pre-bonus basis. *BSE price/turnover from secondary price records, final bhavcopy verification pending.
What to Watch Next
Q3 FY27
Q2 CC +2.4% QoQ and 14.8% margin hold; DSO improves and TCV converts to revenue.
FY28
Non-telecom client mix broadens, EBIT >16% and FCF/PAT near or above 100% while hiring.
FY29
AI delivery transitions to measurable new services revenue and sustainable above-peer growth.
Questions management must answer
- Can Tech Mahindra deliver multi-quarter CC growth ahead of the IT-services peer set without pricing concessions?
- What portion of AI productivity is retained in contracted EBIT versus passed to customers at renewal?
- Will FCF/PAT recover while company hiring and transformation investments resume?
What would falsify the case?
- Utilisation stays ~89% as EBIT stagnates
- Net-new TCV fails to become reported constant-currency revenue
- FCF/PAT repeatedly below 70% with no clear temporary cause
- AI productivity benefits get transferred to clients through repricing

Forensic reading: the numbers below the headline
INVESTIGATIVE DESK · COMPANY-SPECIFIC EXPANDED EDITION
An EBIT margin of 14.8% after twelve consecutive quarters of expansion is an operating achievement. But Q2 rupee revenue growth (+15.6%) is not identical to constant-currency growth (+7.2%), and the incremental earnings advantage from cost repair cannot continue indefinitely. The stock now requires conversion of bookings into higher-quality organic growth and sustainable FCF.

01 / How the business actually earns money
The mechanism the headline cannot explain
Two engines, one reported margin
Telecom and enterprise applications, engineering, BPS and consulting have different utilisation and pricing. Margin expansion can result from pyramiding, subcontracting control, offshore mix and improved execution rather than new pricing power.
Incremental EBIT bridge
Q2 FY27 revenue ₹16,180cr versus ₹13,995cr one year earlier: +₹2,185cr. EBIT ₹2,387cr versus ₹1,699cr: +₹688cr. This is approximately a 31.5% incremental EBIT margin, a strong but non-perpetual cost-leverage result.
Booked versus realised
New deal wins of $1.023bn represent contracted commercial opportunities, not dollar-for-dollar near-term recognised revenue. Wipro’s quarterly bookings weakness and HCLTech’s cautious guidance show that one company’s recovery is not industry-wide demand acceleration.
Independent cross-check / limits of what it proves. Original Wipro Q2 filing reports IT-services constant-currency YoY growth just 0.6%, bookings $2.595bn down 22.9% QoQ and operating cash flow 165.8% of profit. HCLTech highlighted volatile client demand despite AI revenue growth. Peer signals reinforce a selective turnaround, not a uniform industry spending recovery.

The 1:1 proposed bonus would halve both market price and EPS mechanically. All headline valuation assumptions use the pre-bonus share count/price; this remains valid only until adjusted consistently.

04 / Accountability and counterevidence
What management has—and has not—proved
Management maintained its FY27 operating-margin aspiration at ~15% and said AI features in most recent deals. Deal inclusion is not a measured AI revenue stream; management expects to report AI-specific revenue later. The proof is whether higher productivity is retained as margin or competed away through outcome-based pricing.
| Test | Evidence status | Necessary next proof |
|---|---|---|
| Q2 profit & margin | Company audited earnings disclosure | USD/INR series separated |
| Q2 free cash flow | Company $135m | H1 statutory CFO stronger; periods not conflated |
| AI bookings claim | Management statement | AI revenue contribution not separately measured |
| Peer readthrough | Wipro original press release | Different company mix and definitions |
Disconfirming condition. Large deals fail to convert to organic revenue, growth depends on currency/acquisitions, EBIT gains flatten prematurely, AI productivity savings are fully passed through to customers, or sustained cash conversion lags PAT.

Annual FY27–FY29 underwriting, not an isolated target price
Inputs below start from the dated ARDEKO house model, not management guidance. Edit growth, profit margins, cash realisation and exit multiples. The FY29 return calculation uses the approximately 2.46-year interval from October 2026 to March 2029; no dividends are credited. The adjustments are transparent sensitivities, not a rebuilt three-statement DCF.

Risk: The cash-realisation input is linked to projected FCF, while exit prices use the selected earnings/book multiple. A high P/E alongside low FCF conversion should be treated as a thesis-quality warning, not silently assigned a lower mathematical multiple. For bank book valuation, industrial FCF is deliberately not shown.
