Indian IT rallied. The underlying growth engine has not.
On 13 October 2026, HCLTech rose approximately 8.4%, TCS gained 6.8% and the Nifty IT index climbed 5.2% in its strongest session in more than 17 months. HCLTech's earnings release brought a stronger-than-expected profit and bookings story, but also showed just 2.6% constant-currency revenue growth year on year. [I1] [I2] [I3]
The sector still stood about 21% below its start-of-year level. Part of the move may reflect depressed positioning and valuation recognition rather than a confirmed multi-quarter organic-demand recovery. That distinction determines what an investor should pay after the rally.
Central research contradiction. AI-related demand is accelerating, yet AI can also reduce the human work-hours that underpin traditional outsourcing revenue. The unresolved question is who keeps the productivity dividend: the customer or the service provider?
Snapshot at the research cut-off
HCLTech: +8.4% on 13 October; Reuters full-session market move.
Nifty IT: +5.2%; its best daily gain in over 17 months.
Q2 FY27 PAT: INR 5,132 crore, +21.2% year on year.
Indicative trailing P/E: approximately 18.8x at INR 1,321 divided by INR 70.22 LTM EPS.
The earnings surprise is real. So is the denominator problem.
HCLTech combined stronger deal intake and margin repair with much slower expansion of its core organic business. These are related, but not interchangeable, sources of value.
- Demand: enterprise AI adoption across modernisation, governance, migration and agents.
- Orders: US$3.258 billion of TCV, representing multi-year contractual opportunity.
- Delivery: labour and technology produce billable projects and deployment costs.
- Economics: 18.2% EBIT depends on retained productivity versus client price reductions.
- Markets: the +8.4% re-rating recognises potential upside before it is proved in recurring earnings.
A large total contract value is not near-term revenue, nor necessarily incremental profit. Contract tenure, renewals, cloud or compute pass-through, price concessions and transition expenditure can delay or dilute the apparent order value.
| Metric | Q2 FY27 | Investor interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | INR 35,620 crore; +11.5% YoY INR | +2.6% YoY CC; foreign-exchange translation is material |
| Consolidated net income | INR 5,132 crore; +21.2% YoY | Profit expanded materially faster than organic revenue |
| Reported EBIT margin | 18.2%; +131 bps QoQ | 84 bps restructuring cost identified by management |
| New TCV | US$3.258 billion; +27% YoY | Contracted pipeline, not cash collected |
| Advanced-AI revenue | US$219 million; +78% YoY CC | 5.9% of quarterly USD revenue |
| FCF / net income | 87% over rolling 12 months | Good, but not full profit conversion |
A dated timeline, not a fabricated price curve.
An event that moves a stock is not necessarily the event that will move earnings two years later.
| Date | Event | Evidence and interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| 8 October 2026 | TCS results land first | 0.5% sequential CC growth, US$9.6 billion TCV, 24% operating margin and US$3.1 billion annualised AI revenue. [I5] |
| 12 October 2026 | HCLTech earnings and Anthropic partnership | Q2 margin improves and US$3.258 billion of new bookings is disclosed; FY27 consolidated revenue growth guidance remains 2.5-4% CC. [I3] |
| 13 October 2026 | IT stocks surge | HCLTech +8.4%, TCS +6.8% and Nifty IT +5.2%; HCLTech reference closing price INR 1,321 from the dated Screener snapshot. [I1] [I7] |
| 23 October 2026, scheduled | Infosys Q2 financial results | A future verification point at the research cut-off: an independent large-cap test of discretionary spending, organic growth and guidance. [I6] |
No intraday or historical price points have been interpolated.
Who owns the value when the cost of delivering IT falls?
A one-time automation saving is not automatically a permanent gain in supplier earnings. Contract pricing determines who captures the economic surplus.
| Work category | Commercial model | Potential AI impact |
|---|---|---|
| Managed application and infrastructure | Time and materials, SLAs, fixed managed service | Fewer tickets and coding hours; renewals may reset downward |
| Cloud, ERP and cybersecurity | Milestone-led transformation and vendor ecosystems | Migration and governance demand; upstream platforms take a share |
| Engineering R&D | Domain engineering, specialist IP | Automation accelerates development; domain knowledge protects pricing |
| Software and platforms | Licence and recurring subscriptions | Potentially superior incremental margin; volatile renewals |
| Agentic AI and AI factories | Integration and outcome-linked managed programmes | New work but more model costs, security and client bargaining |
Two hypothetical contract outcomes
Supplier-retained productivity: for an illustrative fixed scope, customer invoice 100 falls to 90, staff cost 72 falls to 58, and other or transition costs rise from 10 to 12. Vendor contribution grows from 18 to 20 despite lower sales.
Customer-retained productivity: if a client renegotiates more aggressively, vendor sales could fall to 82 and contribution to 12. The same AI technology can produce opposite shareholder outcomes.
These are hypothetical units from the ARDEKO master report, not reported company engagements. Monitor pricing clauses, utilisation, revenue per employee, gross contribution and renewal behaviour.
Five years of growth, but less operating leverage than the AI narrative implies.
HCLTech's historical dollar results demonstrate why faster-moving AI categories must be reconciled to absolute group earnings.
| Metric | FY22 | FY23 | FY24 | FY25 | FY26 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue, USD million | 11,481 | 12,586 | 13,270 | 13,840 | 14,664 |
| EBIT, USD million | 2,170 | 2,288 | 2,418 | 2,531 | 2,526 |
| EBIT margin | 18.9% | 18.2% | 18.2% | 18.3% | 17.2% |
| Net income, USD million | 1,807 | 1,837 | 1,896 | 2,041 | 1,959 |
| Gross margin | 38.4% | 36.4% | 35.9% | 34.9% | 34.1% |
| Series | FY26 index | Approximate FY22-FY26 CAGR |
|---|---|---|
| Revenue | 127.7 | 6.3% |
| EBIT | 116.4 | 3.9% |
| Net income | 108.4 | 2.0% |
Gross margin contracted from 38.4% to 34.1% across the same period. The reported trailing ROIC is high, but human capital and internally produced intellectual capital are largely expensed. The more meaningful question is whether incremental AI delivery investment produces distributable cash earnings.
TCS confirms demand. It does not confirm a broad revenue upcycle.
The two largest AI revenue disclosures in the group are not directly comparable. A clean definition is as important as a large number.
| Metric | HCLTech | TCS |
|---|---|---|
| Quarter revenue | US$3.724 billion | US$7.642 billion |
| QoQ CC growth | 2.3% | 0.5% |
| Operating margin | 18.2% EBIT | 24.0% operating |
| Bookings / TCV | US$3.258 billion | US$9.6 billion |
| Cash conversion | 87% LTM FCF / NI | 102.2% Q2 OCF / NI |
AI definitions are not like for like
HCLTech: US$219 million of advanced-AI revenue in one quarter, +78% YoY CC. At the same pace that is US$876 million annualised, but the category is narrower and definition-specific.
TCS: US$3.1 billion annualised AI revenue run rate. Broader attribution may include multiple contract categories. The research explicitly warns against ranking the shares by these two headline values.
Look for multiple quarters of accelerating total-company CC growth, margin retained after client repricing, larger services EBIT in absolute dollars, durable FCF and published evidence of AI programmes scaling beyond proofs of concept. Infosys had not released the referenced Q2 FY27 earnings at the research cut-off.
| Change in other revenue | Hypothetical quarterly revenue | Change versus Q2 FY27 benchmark of US$3,724 million |
|---|---|---|
| -10% | US$3,592.5 million | -3.5% |
| 0% | US$3,943 million | +5.9% |
| +10% | US$4,293.5 million | +15.3% |
The source slider allowed one-percentage-point changes from -10% to +10%. The static table preserves the endpoints, midpoint, formula and benchmark. AI contract overlap, category definitions and margin mix mean this is not an independently reported segment bridge.
The price has recovered faster than validated industry growth.
At INR 1,321 and disclosed trailing diluted EPS of INR 70.22, HCLTech traded at an indicative 18.8x trailing earnings on the 13 October snapshot. The new entry price matters as much as the earnings surprise.
| Scenario | FY29 EPS assumption | Exit P/E | Implied share price | Annualised price return | Interpretation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bear: pricing squeeze | INR 78 EPS | 16x | INR 1,248 | -2.3% | Legacy project pricing erodes faster than AI contributes; margins and terminal P/E compress. |
| Base: gradual repair | INR 92 EPS | 19x | INR 1,748 | +12.1% | Moderate service growth and improving efficiency offset slow demand, but a great deal is already recognised. |
| Bull: retained AI value | INR 111 EPS | 23x | INR 2,553 | +30.7% | AI programmes expand recurring workloads and vendors retain productivity gains; higher EPS and valuation both need proof. |
| Required annualised return | March 2029 exit price | Terminal P/E | Required FY29 EPS |
|---|---|---|---|
| 18% | Approximately INR 1,985 | 20x | Approximately INR 99.2 |
| 18% | Approximately INR 1,985 | 16x | Approximately INR 124.1 |
The removed controls permitted terminal P/E inputs from 14x to 28x and required-return inputs from 8% to 26%, using a 2.46-year period and INR 1,321 entry price. Multiples and earnings cannot both be raised without independent justification. The source note saying “constant share count for sugar” appears to be a copy error and requires editorial correction.
What supports the transition, and what is still unproved?
The story earns confidence from independent earnings and cash evidence, not the number of AI announcements.
Supporting evidence
- HCLTech Q2 PAT +21.2% YoY, reported EBIT margin 18.2% and US$3.258 billion of bookings. [I3]
- Advanced-AI revenue +78% YoY CC in the reported company category. [I3]
- TCS separately reported material AI activity and 24% operating margin. [I5]
- HCLTech rolling FCF / net income at 87% and reported ROIC at 41.2%. [I3]
Counterevidence and open questions
- Group organic revenue growth remains 2.6% YoY CC, not a structural demand inflection.
- AI categories differ; non-AI contracts may shrink as clients demand labour savings.
- HCLTech added 6,450 net employees; labour-light earnings are not yet evidenced.
- Software revenue fell 5.8% QoQ CC; benefits may be cyclical margin recovery.
- Bookings do not document AI contract profitability or recurring gross margin.
Falsification test. If two large-cap reporting rounds show weak organic CC growth, deteriorating renewal pricing and no sustained increase in EBIT dollars or FCF, reject the sector-wide AI earnings upcycle even if headline AI revenue labels keep growing.
The proof window is the next two reporting rounds.
Momentum is an early market signal. Subscription, contract repricing and cash conversion will determine whether the transformation lasts.
| Window | Verification event | Question to test |
|---|---|---|
| 23 October 2026 | Infosys Q2 and guidance | Is there organic growth beyond HCLTech? |
| October-November 2026 | Wipro / Tech Mahindra updates | Do bookings convert into broad-based revenue and FCF rather than isolated deals? |
| January 2027 | HCLTech Q3 FY27 | Does services growth persist and reported EBIT remain in the guided 17.5-18.5% band? |
| January-April 2027 | TCS follow-through | Does annualised AI activity translate into accelerating total CC revenue? |
| FY27 annual cycle | FCF and contracted business | Do margins and 87% cash conversion hold through wage and transition costs? |
| FY28-FY29 | Scale versus staff | Does revenue per employee rise alongside absolute profit, customer retention and ROIC? |
The price has reversed faster than industry demand. Sustainable shareholder upside requires AI efficiency to become retained earnings, not merely lower customer invoices.
